Christmas with Jesus AND Santa is very overwhelming for me. I feel like every time I mention Santa or elves or the behavior "list" said creatures keep that I also need to put in a plug for Jesus.

"Yes, Santa's watching...and Jesus is sad when you hit Colin."

It's because I want Audrey and Colin to grow up with the understanding that Christ's birth is the what we are really celebrating at Christmas and this Santa stuff is just another fun thing about the holiday. But obviously the toys are the most important part to a toddler - right? To any kid really? Because of my adding Jesus to every Christmas discussion I worry that Audrey may have the impression that Jesus and Santa are both in on this North Pole, night flight, baby doll chimney delivery thing. How on earth are you supposed to separate the two? Maybe it's not possible with kids this small?

We are all sick. I didn't want the kids to have cereal with milk this morning because it aggravates the runny nose situation (myth?). So I made raisin toast and cut up bananas and oranges. Audrey ate all this and then requested cereal. I explained that she could have cereal but without milk. After placing the bowl of dry Rice Krispies in front of her I hear her mumble,

"Mom, Santa's watching you not giving me milk."

  1. I like that someone is remembering Christ in the half marathon- yet it seems totally sacrilegious to me. Maybe its just me. Yes, I need to find out how Santa came to be a part of our holiday. Because its confusing when trying to explain to kids the "Reason for the Season" when all they hear from everybody else and Dora the Explorer is: SANTA! TOYS! COOOOOOKIES!!

  2. So, Sharon got me a book for my birthday http://www.amazon.com/Christ-Centered-Christmas-Traditions-Closer-ebook/dp/B0045EO6Z2.

She said that she and Mike never pushed the whole Santa thing and they didn't talk about getting gifts from Santa. They do this thing with a manger. Mike made a little (ok, not so little, brayden could lay in there wooden manger looking thing and they got some straw and everytime you do something nice for someone you get to put some straw in the manger... thus making is a very comfy place for the baby Jesus. Anyway, its kinda cute. I haven't read the book yet but apparently she had to go to a few deserat books to find it. Obviously it is on amazon.

  3. Hey Jill this is Brittney, Laurel’s sis-in law- I think we are all struggling with the same dilemma… This year I put framed pictures of Christ on our tree and framed a picture of Mary and baby Jesus that I put near our tree. For family night, we showed Avery the pictures on the tree and the framed picture of Mary and talked about Jesus and his birth. We also showed her our nativity and I went to the library and there were tons of religious kid’s books about the birth of Christ, so I checked some out and we read those before we go to bed. We are in no way doing things perfectly, and Avery is still really young, but she can tell you the Christmas story when asked. Also, a blog that I love to read focused a week on CHRISTmas and had some great guest bloggers… I really love a lot of her ideas! http://iammommahearmeroar.blogspot.com/search/label/Christmas
She has cute ideas like a good deed advent and even if you don’t like the style of the advent,I think it is a good idea, and she made her kids a nativity they could play with. I also love the Little People stuff and they have a really cute plastic nativity. I don’t want Avery touching our fancy stuff… she would probably really like a set she could pick up and hold! Sorry this was so much! I was just thinking about this same thing the other day and wanted to share!
